Tapis \Ta"pis\, n. [F. See {Tapestry}.]
   Tapestry; formerly, the cover of a council table.

   {On}, or {Upon}, {the tapis}, on the table, or under
      consideration; as, to lay a motion in Parliament on the
      tapis.
